Twiggy the "60's phenomenon"

Twiggy is my favourite model from the 1960's. With her waif like figure, boyish hair cut and striking eye lashes she created an image that would epitomise an era. She became internationally known as the world's first supermodel.

...................................

.........................................Twiggy Lawson was a 60's pop icon (supermodel, actress and singer) known for her large eyes, long eyelashes, and thin build, she is regarded as one of the most famous models of all time.
.............................................

........................................
She was born Lesley Hornby in the London suburb of Neasden, the daughter of William Norman Hornby, a master carpenter and joiner and Nellie Lydia "Helen" Reeman, a factory worker at a printing firm and a counter girl at Woolworth's. She attended Brondesbury and Kilburn High School in Salusbury Road, Kilburn.

.................................
.............................................
In 1966, Nigel Daves noticed the young Lesley Hornby working in a hair salon and offered her a modelling contract. She was only sixteen and weighed 41 kg.

..............................

Daves advised her to go by her childhood nickname, Twiggy.
....................................................
...................................................

Twiggy arrived in New York in March 1967. It was believed that the Twiggy craze would die down within a month; Twiggy, however, became an instant icon and a supermodel.
......................................
.........................
Known for the high fashion mod look created by Mary Quant, Twiggy changed the world of fashion. Whereas most women fashion models were full-figured with traditionally feminine hairstyles, Twiggy was famous for her slender, short-haired androgynous look.
................................

..............................................

Her style has dominated the runways for forty years. She was also famous for drawing long, fake eyelashes under her bottom lashes. These are, unsurprisingly, named Twiggys.
...................................

..............................................
She was regarded as the face of 1960's Swinging London, along with other models such as Celia Hammond.
In early 1968, Twiggy toured Japan and filmed commercials for Toyota
Motors and Choco Flakes breakfast cereal. In 1969 she did commercial work in the United States for Diet Rite Cola.
.....................................
......................................

Twiggy was the first teenage female supermodel.
.................................
What about you? Do you like Twiggy or do you prefer another model from the 60's?

Penelope Tree had a cool look to her.

I'm surprised I'm the first one to comment!

Anyhow, I love Twiggy (esp. when she was on ANTM-- a bit humanizing!), but looking at her for too much makes me tired of her face. (I mean to say she seems to have just one look sometimes)

love how informative your posts are!

Love her! And I've been working on a vintage model post so I will definitely have to skip Twiggy, after all the work you've put in!

i luuuv Twiggy! i imagine her being stylish even when naked! she reminds me always kate moss's uniqueness:) (con:she was way too short for a model)

I'm a fan of Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree too...but my image of the Sixties wouldn't be the same without Twiggy. They all had different looks, and I can't think that one was better than the others or so on.

you know, i love twiggy too, and part of it is just that she's kind of, well, funny looking. and i mean this in the best possible way: my favorite people are the quirky, unconventionally attractive types. twiggy's got those big ol' crinkly ears, the not-so-great british teeth, the Clockwork Orange eyelashes, and the delightfully knobbly knees. and her smile is so pleasantly goofy in some of the more candid shots of her. for these reasons, i am an undoubted fan. +)

twiggy!! haha! btu somehow; her look on ANTM was a bit too much.. but tyra was just OTT.
lol; not sure to hate or love her.. cos she WAS the one who brought abt the craze for really skinny models!

Oh, great post! I love Twiggy, i really do. She was a rare thing beautiful, innocent and youthful not like the young models and celebs and ordinary girls today, that are obsessed with looking older and being seen as 'sexy'.
Twiggy had a one of a kind look, and is such an icon. I really do admire her.
Love the pics you chose, and look my header is there! Oh, and I adore mod fashion!

it so funny to see her on ANTM, all grown up and everything - she seems like a really really genuine person and her style has lasted (and will last) way past her "month of fame"
cool post :)

Hello! I love Twiggy style back in the 60's, and I love the fact that she and Goldie Hawn had such in common those days, check out Cactus Girl and you will see!

Adorei as fotos.

o the 60's loved twiggy sooo much she in one of my 3 fashion icons! i did a post about her a while ago but only a sentence or two!!! i also love edie and andy (warhol)!!!!!

i think the twiggy style is a bit out of fashion (you know, the edie segdwick look was very seen last season, we need some recycling), but she will be a fashion icon forever...

Twiggy was the IT 60's girl.
Everyone was entranced and the anorexic was not spoken.
Hey she was a Brit, born skinny..
The Shrimp was nice to if a bit chilly, but then they all were except Verushka..

ambika said...

Twiggy was definitely iconic. I was always fond of Verushka as well, if only for 'Blow Up.'

Twiggy was the cutest teenager in the 60s for sure. Can't believe she was 32-23-32!!! I love the way they used to make-up her eyes. Lovely.

Twiggy's awesome. But, I can't seem to keep thinking of how little she knows of modeling. We see her on ANTM, and some of the things she says are so... _______. It's like she doesn't know what she's talking about haha. I like those pictures tho.. they're so "mod".

That's what I think =S
